ABERCONWY AM calls on Welsh Government re-think decision to abolish Right to Buy
Following the announcement that the Welsh Labour Government would abolish the right for social housing tennants to buy their homes if Labour wins the 2016 assembly election, Assembly Member for Aberconwy Janet Finch-Saunders AM, has asked Welsh Ministers to think again.
Speaking in the Welsh Conservatives debate, the AM highlighted the importance of Right to Buy, which has enabled 138,000 people in Wales to benefit from buying their own home.
She said the scheme was:
“Not just about the right to buy but the right to aspire, the right to achieve and the right to acquire.”
Commenting on the shortage of housing in Wales, the AM stated:
“We have a housing crisis. One that is obvious when I think of my constituents, battling to get up the never-ending waiting lists for social housing or struggling to find an affordable house to buy.”
Mrs Finch-Saunders called on the Welsh Government to address the need for housing sector stimulation. She noted the impact of burdensome regulations, making it economically unviable to build homes in Wales saying that:
“The Welsh Government should be supporting the Welsh house building trade, not forcing it over the border.”
“Welsh Conservatives would ensure all proceeds of Right to Buy sales are invested in new social housing, to increase affordable housing supply.”
