Labour’s ‘bizarre’ voluntary mergers decision slammed
Commenting on the Labour minister’s decision to reject all three voluntary council merger proposals – including Conwy and Denbighshire, a merger included in each Williams commission report option - Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Local Government, Janet Finch-Saunders AM, said:
“This bizarre decision is a slap in the face for those councils that have done the work and come forward voluntarily.
“It was the Labour minister who called for councils to do this. Today the same Labour minister slaps them all down. This astounding development is another symptom of Labour’s haphazard, uncertain approach to managing local government in Wales.
“I fear the minister is simply making this up as he goes along.
“Welsh Conservatives have always supported those councils that could provide evidence of a successful merger.
“Labour ministers must now provide further information on exactly why criteria have not been met and exactly what will happen next.”
