‘D-Day’ for voluntary council mergers

‘D-Day’ for voluntary council mergers

Commenting on tonight’s deadline for voluntary council mergers in Wales, Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Local Government, Janet Finch-Saunders AM, said:

“This is D-Day for any councils wishing to merge voluntarily.  Those that can provide clear and strong evidence of the benefits to communities and frontline services should be properly supported.

“This should not be about scare tactics from the Labour minister or empty talk of six or seven councils – as threatened this week.

“This should be about councils looking carefully at the potential for mergers, assessing whether communities can be better served by change, and providing evidence to corroborate that.

“Good leadership is now required from Labour and I hope to see statement on applications received as soon as possible.”
