Following Justice Week 2021, which took place from 1 to 5 March, Janet Finch-Saunders MS – Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy – has urged the Welsh Government to establish what steps can be taken to see all schools in Wales participate in The Big Legal Lesson next year.
Commenting on positive moves to educate young people, Janet said:
“Children have been affected heavily by coronavirus through school closures, and most young people never being consulted on decisions. Against the context of Covid-19, Justice Week provided an opportunity for a vital health check on our rights, our justice system and ultimately on the rule of law.
“The Big Legal Lesson is a classroom resource designed by teachers to introduce children and young people to the rule of law. In a positive step forward for civic engagement, 732 schools took part this year.
“I have now urged the Counsel General to lead a review to establish what steps can be taken to see all schools in Wales participate in The Big Legal Lesson next year. Greater knowledge of the law will only benefit our young people in becoming rounded and engaged citizens.”
