The Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy – Janet Finch-Saunders MS – has today (02 December) welcomed an update to her long-running campaign to improve road safety in Glan Conwy, with the news that the Trunk Road Agent has been instructed to develop a design which adjusts some of the adjacent parking bays to improve forward visibility.
Since her last correspondence with officials on the concerns, temporary additional signs have been placed on the approaches to the crossing. Further to the Member’s continued petitioning to improve road safety in the area, Welsh Government officials and representatives of the Trunk Road Agent have met at the crossing to discuss options to improve the facility.
Commenting on the update, Janet said:
“Following concerns raised about the safety of the zebra crossing in Glan Conwy, I was most pleased to make urgent representations to the Welsh Government which resulted in the introduction of temporary signage. When this interim measure was announced, I also pushed for a crucial visibility assessment to assess what further actions could be taken to ensure long-term road safety.
“I am pleased to learn that, as a direct consequence of these representations, the Welsh Government have instructed the Trunk Road Agent to develop a design which adjusts some of the adjacent parking bays to improve forward visibility to the crossing. Once the design has been completed, officials will be able to consider the merits of this amendment and determine if this change should be introduced.
“Road safety is a core concern for all of us who live locally. With this in mind, and much like the Glan Conwy crossing concerns, I will also be undertaking a site visit with local authority officials to Queen’s Road in Craig-y-Don later this month. Following a successful campaign to increase investment in the local play area, the ongoing traffic issue presents a real risk to the safety of young local children.
“I am committed to finding sensible solutions that benefit both road users and pedestrians. This recent success shows the power of local campaigns, ensuring that the voices and concerns of residents are heard by the administration in Cardiff Bay. I deeply value the patience and support of Glan Conwy residents in my work petitioning for these essential local road improvements and urge anyone with a road safety concern to contact my office as a priority.”
