The Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy – Janet Finch-Saunders MS – has today (16 March) marked Young Carers Action Day 2021 by making clear the need to boost access to post-16 education, including through the introduction of a concessionary fares scheme and a Young Adults Carers Future Grant of £60 a week.   

Young Carers Action Day is an annual event led by Carers Trust. It raises awareness and calls for action to increase support for young people with caring responsibilities. You can find out more by heading to Carers.org/YCAD. 

Celebrating Aberconwy’s young carers, Janet said:  

“Young carers, right across Aberconwy and Wales, have a huge amount of responsibility on their shoulders, so I can just imagine how distressing it must be when individuals do not fully understand their role – a concerning fact that was underlined further during the course of the pandemic.  

“In caring for their loved ones, often on top of other commitments, our young carers have developed sought after skills in their resilience, time-management and empathy. This year’s theme is about protecting young carer’s futures, promoting these skills to unlock further opportunities. 

“We can all play a supporting role, from schools to employers. As a means of recognising the pressures that our young carers face, and to ensure that these skills can be developed through education and work placements, I have been arguing for the introduction of a concessionary fares scheme and a Young Adults Carers Future Grant of £60 a week.”
