With the increasing popularity of Snowdonia National Park, and many of its villages and mountains becoming even busier, Janet Finch-Saunders AM has successfully challenged the Welsh Government on the increasing parking problem along the A5 by Llyn Ogwen: receiving assurances that a draft report is being produced.
Janet said:
“Llyn Ogwen is at the heart of the National Park, and the foot of one of Wales’ most iconic and popular mountains: Tryfan.
“Whilst it is fantastic to see so many making the most of the great outdoors, for Llyn Ogwen, this is causing serious parking problems.
“People are not only parking in car parks and lay-bys, but on the verges of the A5 in the area. Recently, I saw first-hand how this is causing a hazardous pinch point near the County border at the top of Nant Ffrancon.
“Given the risks caused to pedestrians and road users by the current parking situation, I welcome the Welsh Government’s decision to act on my question by advising that a draft report on the parking issues is being produced. However, with the tourist season already in full swing, I think it would be better for all if the Cabinet Secretary looked at implementing a positive solution sooner rather than later”.
Notes
Written Assembly Question by Janet:
Will the Cabinet Secretary respond to road safety concerns caused by vehicles parking along the A5 by Llyn Ogwen, and outline what measures the Welsh Government, in conjunction with relevant authorities, will take to address this roadside parking problem?
Response by Ken Skates, Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Transport:
A draft report on parking issues in this area is currently being produced, which will outline potential improvement options. The delivery of any changes will be subject to budget availability and will be prioritised against other similar schemes across Wales.
