A canoe-based ‘litter paddle’ has been confirmed for the programme of the Snowdonia Society’s 2018 MAD (Make a Difference) Weekend this September.
Two local businesses, the Plas y Brenin mountain sports centre and Snowdonia Watersports, have donated a fleet of Canadian-style canoes for a lake-based clean up of Llyn Padarn, Llanberis, on Sunday 23 September.
The ‘litter paddle’ is one of a host of activities in the MAD Weekend programme and will see a group of intrepid volunteers take to the water to remove found rubbish and debris from the iconic Snowdonia lake under the guidance of experience paddlers.
Snowdonia Watersports founder Chris Thorne said: “As a business operating on the banks of Llyn Padarn which relies on it’s picturesque popularity we really feel there is a need to keep the area clean and tidy and feel duty-bound to support the MAD Weekend fully.”
The litter issue
Snowdonia Society Director John Harold said: “Litter is an all-pervading issue in the National Park and we’re tackling it on public footpaths, beaches, summits, and even in our rivers and lakes.”
He added: “It’s reassuring to see volunteers and local businesses alike join forces to tackle this problem by being part of our MAD Weekend. We really hope to make a splash for 2018”.
