Calls for A470 road safety review

The Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy – Janet Finch-Saunders MS – has today (4 December) called on the Welsh Government to consider reviewing options to improve road safety along the A470 between Glan Conwy and Tal-y-Cafn, including reduced speed limits and a potential redesign.

Over the weekend, the A470 was shut in both directions for hours due to a two-vehicle crash on the section near Bodnant. The incident saw an ambulance, paramedic, and the Wales Air Ambulance attend the scene. The injuries sustained in the crash are not thought to be life-threatening.

Commenting on the road safety concern, Janet said:

“Over recent weeks, serious concerns have been raised with me about the safety of the A470 between Glan Conwy and Tal-y-Cafn. In particular, when travelling south from Glan Conwy, there are a series of dangerous bends leading up to the top of Bodnant hill.

“Concerningly, this portion of road has become extremely dangerous to local residents, as the short straight stretch of highway is often used by motorists as a key opportunity to overtake. This occurs in spite of severe corners at both ends of this road, and a junction to Eglwysbach near the top.

“The crash on the A470 over the weekend once again underscored the danger faced by road users along this stretch. Whilst I understand that the injuries sustained in this crash are not thought to be life-threatening, the risk posed to individuals driving along this section of A470 is undeniable.

“This is why, in a letter to the Welsh Minister for Transport, I have called on the Welsh Government to arrange for the relevant road officials to assess the safety and viability of implementing reduced speed limits at the most problematic parts of the A470 between Glan Conwy and Tal-y-Cafn.

“I have also asked if their officials could advise whether any designs have been considered for straightening the bad series of bends between the top of Bodnant hill and Glan Conwy.”
