Calls for Christmas Clarity for Businesses

With businesses in Wales facing serious difficulties and proprietors breaking down as a consequence of financial devastation, Janet Finch-Saunders MS has called on the Welsh Government to provide urgent clarity as to the arrangements for hospitality businesses over the Christmas holiday.

The current national regulations which order restaurants, cafes, bars and pubs to close at 6pm and alcohol not to be served at any time, could be in place until 23 December, when temporary relaxations to the restrictions will be made to allow more people to see each other at home over the festive period. However, the Member of the Welsh Parliament has demanded that the hospitality sector be informed now whether the relaxation will allow hospitality to be open later than 6pm and serve alcohol.

Commenting on the situation, Janet said:

“I have been contacted by distressed hoteliers who have made clear to me that Christmas cancellations are coming quickly due to uncertainty as to whether guests might be able to enjoy a glass of wine with their Christmas dinner.

“Such is the uncertainty as to what the Welsh Government will do next that I am aware of businesses which have decided to close for the remainder of the month.

“I spoke of hope that restrictions could be lifted in Conwy County as early as 17 December, but the First Minister responded that they would be reviewed. So how long these draconian measures will be dragged out for is uncertain, which leaves businesses unable to plan.

“Income from this time of year is essential to get many in the hospitality sector through to Easter. I fear for what could happen to many employers and employees over the next few months”.
