A senior Labour MP has today called on the Labour Party to be more ‘bold and radical’ if it is to win a majority at the next General Election.
Jo Stevens made the claim in response to a report by the Fabian Society which said the party is “too weak” to achieve a parliamentary majority in its own right.
A claim dismissed as “alarming” by Welsh Conservatives.
Responding, Aberconwy AM Janet Finch-Saunders AM said:
“It is quite bizarre that Jo Stevens thinks Labour need to be more bold and more radical to stand a chance of winning a General Election.
“Having plucked their leader from the militant wing of the Labour movement, there can’t be much room for the party to go any further to the left.
“We are witnessing the most unpredictable and volatile phase in UK politics for more than a generation, so nothing can be taken for granted.
“That’s why it’s important for voters to ask themselves if they can afford another Labour Government at UK level - particularly when you consider Labour’s appalling record here in Wales: one-in-seven on an NHS waiting list, the lowest take-home pay in the UK, and Pisa results which show just how far behind the rest of the UK the Welsh education system is.
“Whilst the polls currently suggest that a Labour majority is unlikely, can we really afford to take that risk?”
