Janet Finch-Saunders MS, Member for Aberconwy, has today (04 May) submitted a written question to the First Minister to urge the Welsh Government to do more to support the ‘complex needs’ of Wales’ tourism industry.

In a Written Assembly Question to the First Minister, Janet asked:

“What steps is the First Minister taking to enact a sector specific COVID-19 support plan that acknowledges international best practice, with regards to Welsh holiday park businesses?

Her question follows an influx of correspondence from concerned local holiday park owners, as well as a coordinated campaign by the British Holiday & Home Parks Association.

Commenting on the situation, Janet said:

“Over the last week, I have been contacted by several concerned holiday park owners asking for a more tailored approach that better understands the complex needs of the tourism industry.

“These businesses, which are the backbone to a thriving North Wales economy, were some of the first to close and will inevitably be among the last to reopen once restrictions are lifted.

“The knock-on trade that these village-sized businesses offer our towns and villages during the summer season is invaluable. Many have also supported our valiant front-line workers by offering essential accommodation to self-isolate way from their families throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

“While I welcome the Welsh Government’s existing support schemes, further measures are necessary if we are to better support this vital sector, safeguarding both jobs and livelihoods.
