The Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy – Janet Finch-Saunders MS – has today (19 October) spoken of her dismay at the revelations that the Welsh Government has been briefing organisations about a confirmed two-week lockdown beginning on October 23.
According to a leaked document, a formal announcement from the Welsh Government will be made later today. Over the weekend, the Welsh Conservatives have written to the Llywydd to call for an emergency session of the Senedd, cautioning the serious implications of this announcement and urging for “detailed public scrutiny of this important matter.”
Commenting on the revelations over the weekend, Janet said:
“This is yet another instance where the Welsh Government have chosen to bypass the Welsh Parliament, by first briefing select outside organisations. It demonstrates the breath-taking arrogance of this administration and is incredibly disrespectful to the public who expect the Welsh Parliament to carry out its functions as an essential check and balance.
“The ramifications of this proposal are huge, which is why a full and proper discussion must take place in the chamber of the Senedd. The long-term negative mental health impact on our most vulnerable residents must be considered, with the necessary access to support networks provided.
“These Welsh Government proposals must consider the concerns of the Older People’s Commissioner, as well as other stakeholders, to ensure that the needs of older people are not overlooked. Indeed, authorities must ensure that due respect is given to their right for private and family life.
“The local lockdown of Conwy County has already posed considerable issues to viability of many businesses, placing jobs and livelihoods at risk. Any proposal for an extended circuit breaker must run parallel with an announcement of a proportionate financial package to support those businesses and sectors who are adversely affected.
“If this proposal is to be adopted then the Welsh Government must urgently release the data underpinning its necessity, providing a full and proper explanation as to how this lockdown will make a difference. They must also give the requisite time to public services to adapt and prepare.”
