According to new Welsh Government released figures, spending by councils on roads and highways has fallen to an 11-year low.
Responding to the figures, Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Local Government - Janet Finch-Saunders AM – has called for councils to ensure value for money for taxpayers.
She said:
“These figures for are deeply concerning and Welsh families will rightly question where their council tax bills are being spent.
“Over the last twelve months I have noticed a spike in the number of complaints I have received about potholes and other road related issues, and it’s fairly obvious that failing to invest adequately now is only going to lead to even greater problems with our roads further down the line.
“In recent years families have been hit by crippling hikes to their bills, and only last week we learnt that councils have spent more than £100 million on redundancies in the last three years.
“Councils need to strike a greater balance with their resources, prioritising infrastructure above golden handshakes and providing value for money to Welsh taxpayers.”
