“Financial Scandal” as millions spent on 1-minute Video

Following a written question, Freedom of Information Request, and complaint being submitted to the Welsh Government, Janet Finch-Saunders, Assembly Member for Aberconwy, has uncovered the fact that £1,733,886 was spent on a 60 second Year of the Sea advert.

Reacting to this, Janet said:

“More than anyone, as a Member who is honoured to represent a constituency which is at the forefront of the Welsh and British tourist industry, I believe that it is imperative that the Welsh Government supports the industry – which includes the need to promote Wales globally.

“However, it really is unjustifiable that the Welsh Government have spent £1,733,886 – an increasing amount – on a minute long video campaign for 2018’s Year of the Sea. What this means is that another video, and therefore more millions, is likely to be seen with the launch of next year’s campaign, and so on until we are released from Welsh Labour control.

“Going forward, the Welsh Government needs to focus on ensuring that it is making the most of every £1 it spends, should look at investing in a marketing strategy that is clear and prioritised for a number of years rather than just one, and listen to what people in the industry really want. Indeed, over million and a half being spent on one short video does not represent a good investment or value for money, but a financial scandal for which Lord Elis-Thomas AM, Minister for Culture, Tourism and Sport, must be held accountable”.

Written Assembly Question to Lord Elis-Thomas AM:

Will the Minister make a statement on the fact that the Year of the Sea 2018 film with the seaplane has cost £1,733,886 so far, and explain whether consideration could be given to investing in a marketing strategy which transcends years, instead of videos for every thematic year?
