The fourth closure of the Menai Suspension Bridge in less than two weeks has once again highlighted the vulnerability of one of North Wales’ most important transport links.
These repeated closures have caused significant disruption for residents, businesses, commuters and visitors, while raising fresh concerns about the resilience of the current crossing and the impact on the wider regional economy.
The latest closure comes as a public petition calling for a new bridge attracted more than 1,000 signatures within its first 24 hours, demonstrating the strength of local feeling on the issue. A pubic meeting to discuss the recent works and closures on the bridge will take place at, Llangefni Town Hall, Bulkeley Square ,Llangefni ,Anglesey ,LL77 7LR, from 6:00PM – 8:00pm .
Janet Finch-Saunders, Senedd Member for Bangor Conwy Môn said:
“Four closures in less than two weeks is simply not sustainable, which is why I am calling on the First Minister to make an urgent statement on the situation and outline what action the Welsh Government intends to take to improve resilience across the Menai crossings.
The Menai crossings are not just important to Ynys Môn. They are vital to the economy of North Wales. Every closure causes disruption, delays and uncertainty.
The growing support for a third crossing, shows there is a clear appetite for serious discussions about the future of transport resilience across the Menai Strait. The fact that a petition secured over 1,000 signatures in just 24 hours demonstrates the strength and feeling locally. People are tired of repeated closures and want solutions.
I will continue to work with colleagues, stakeholders and local communities to ensure these concerns are heard and that all options for improving resilience and connectivity are properly considered.”
Mae cau Pont Menai am y pedwerydd gwaith mewn llai na phythefnos unwaith eto wedi tynnu sylw at fregusrwydd un o gysylltiadau trafnidiaeth pwysicaf y Gogledd.
Mae cau’r bont dro ar ôl tro fel hyn wedi achosi aflonyddwch sylweddol i drigolion, busnesau, cymudwyr ac ymwelwyr, tra'n codi pryderon newydd am wydnwch y groesfan bresennol a'r effaith ar yr economi ranbarthol ehangach.
Daw'r achos o gau diweddaraf wrth i ddeiseb gyhoeddus yn galw am bont newydd ddenu mwy na 1,000 o lofnodion o fewn ei 24 awr gyntaf, gan ddangos cryfder teimladau lleol ynghylch y mater. Cynhelir cyfarfod cyhoeddus i drafod y gwaith diweddar a chau’r bont yn Neuadd y Dref Llangefni, Sgwâr Bulkeley, Llangefni, Ynys Môn, LL77 7LR, rhwng 6:00PM a 8:00pm.
Meddai Janet Finch-Saunders, Aelod o'r Senedd Bangor Conwy Môn:
"Dydy cau pedair gwaith mewn llai na phythefnos ddim yn gynaliadwy, a dyna pam rwy'n galw ar y Prif Weinidog i wneud datganiad brys ar y sefyllfa ac amlinellu pa gamau y mae Llywodraeth Cymru yn bwriadu eu cymryd i wella gwytnwch y croesfannau ar draws y Fenai.
Nid i Ynys Môn yn unig y mae croesfannau Menai yn bwysig. Maen nhw’n hanfodol i economi’r Gogledd. Mae pob achos o gau yn arwain at aflonyddwch, oedi ac ansicrwydd.
Mae'r gefnogaeth gynyddol i drydedd groesfan yn dangos bod awydd clir am drafodaethau o ddifrif am ddyfodol gwytnwch trafnidiaeth ar draws Afon Menai. Mae'r ffaith bod deiseb wedi denu dros 1,000 o lofnodion mewn cwta 24 awr yn dangos y cryfder a'r teimlad yn lleol. Mae pobl wedi hen ddiflasu ar weld y bont yn cau dro ar ôl tro ac eisiau atebion.
Byddaf yn parhau i weithio gyda chydweithwyr, rhanddeiliaid a chymunedau lleol i sicrhau bod y pryderon hyn yn cael eu clywed a bod yr holl opsiynau ar gyfer gwella gwytnwch a chysylltedd yn cael eu hystyried yn briodol."
