Janet Finch-Saunders, Assembly Members for Aberconwy, today led the Welsh Conservative call for a Council Tax freeze for every household in Wales.
The Welsh Government is set to receive funding from the Conservative-led Coalition, resulting from third Council Tax freeze in three years in England. Last year the administration in Cardiff Bay received £38.9million.
By contrast, under Labour in Wales, Council Tax has risen each year, despite the Welsh Labour Government receiving the money to implement a freeze.
Figures from the Welsh Conservatives show that the average Band D household in Wales would have been over £100 better off next year, had Labour used the money it was given to freeze Council Tax each year since 2011/12.
Janet Finch-Saunders AM, Shadow Minister for Local Government, said, "For the last two years, families and pensioners in Wales have faced the highest Council Tax hikes in Britain as rates were frozen in England and Scotland.
"It is grossly unfair that hard-pressed taxpayers in Wales are being penalised and facing yet more Council Tax hikes.
"Average band D Council Tax bills have risen by 140% in Wales since Labour came to power and, without a freeze next year, are now set to soar even higher.
"In the past Labour Ministers have refused to put money in people’s pockets and grant a Council Tax freeze because they believe the government can spend money better than people themselves.
"Welsh Conservatives believe it is time to trust people. It is time for a Council Tax freeze."
