Janet Finch-Saunders MS, Shadow Minister for Climate Change, is urging residents to take part in the Big Butterfly Count between 12 July and 4 August.

The Count is a UK-wide survey aimed at helping assess the health of our environment simply by counting the amount and type of butterflies (and some day-flying moths) we see.

Commenting on the Count Janet said:

“As part of the national effort to combat the nature crisis I encourage as many residents as possible to take part in this, the world's biggest survey of butterflies!

“We count butterflies because not only are they beautiful creatures to be around but they are also extremely important. They are vital parts of the ecosystem as both pollinators and components of the food chain.

“Worryingly the numbers of butterflies and moths in the UK have decreased significantly since the 1970s. We need to understand how serious the decline is in 2024, and as such how serious the state of nature is too”.

Mae Janet Finch-Saunders AS, Gweinidog Newid Hinsawdd yr Wrthblaid, yn annog trigolion i gymryd rhan yn y Big Butterfly Count rhwng 12 Gorffennaf a 4 Awst.

Mae’r cyfrif yn arolwg ledled y DU gyda'r nod o helpu i asesu iechyd ein hamgylchedd drwy gyfrif faint o loÿnnod byw a pha fathau (a rhai gwyfynod sy'n hedfan yn ystod y dydd) a welwn ni.

Wrth sôn am y cyfrif dywedodd Janet:

“Fel rhan o'r ymdrech genedlaethol i fynd i'r afael â'r argyfwng natur rwy'n annog cymaint o drigolion â phosibl i gymryd rhan yn y cyfrif, sef arolwg mwyaf y byd o loÿnnod byw!

“Rydyn ni'n cyfrif gloÿnnod byw oherwydd nid yn unig maen nhw'n greaduriaid hardd i'w gweld, ond hefyd am eu bod nhw’n hynod bwysig. Maen nhw’n rhannau hanfodol o'r ecosystem fel peillwyr ac elfen o'r gadwyn fwyd.

“Mae niferoedd gloÿnnod byw a gwyfynod yn y DU wedi gostwng yn sylweddol ers yr 1970au. Mae angen i ni ddeall pa mor ddifrifol yw'r dirywiad yn 2024, a pha mor ddifrifol yw cyflwr natur hefyd yn sgil hynny”.
