Wednesday, 16 November, 2011

Cllr Janet Finch-Saunders AM today called on the Minister for Education and Skills to outline his plans to get more looked-after children into university.

Janet said: “I think it is important to draw attention to the fact that only 1% of children who have been in care go on to study at university in the UK.

“This compares to 45% of the general population of young people and accounts – by the Minister’s own estimate – for only 12 – 18 care leavers in Wales.

“I want to see the Welsh Government taking real action to address this woefully inadequate statistic.”

Additionally, only 48% of 19 year old care leavers are known to be in education, employment or training.

Only 10% of care leavers achieved 5 or more GCSEs grades A*-C. This compares to 66.6% of the general schooling population achieving.
