Last week, Janet Finch-Saunders, the Member of the Senedd for Bangor, Conwy and Môn, met with Alun Prichard, Director of RSPB Cymru, to discuss concerns raised by residents about the charges for people using only the café at the RSPB Conwy site.

Janet commented:

"Many residents in Conwy contacted me with deep concerns about having to pay an additional charge just to use the café at the RSPB site, rather than to walk around the main reserve.

"During my meeting with the RSPB, I raised these concerns with the Director and called on the organisation to remove the additional charge for people who only wish to access the café. Many local people use this café as a place to meet with friends and socialise. It is important that residents have access to these types of facilities."

Following the meeting, Mr Prichard provided Janet with the following statement:

"Lovely to speak to you earlier this week and to talk through the concerns raised by a number of local people who love the café and the site. Clearly, there is a degree of disappointment and confusion, and we discussed the fact that the purpose of this change to tackle an unfair situation has sadly got lost in translation. Previously, visitors could use the café without paying an entry charge or holding a membership and then wander around the reserve, which is not fair to those who have paid the entry charge or membership for exactly that experience.

"Correcting this unfair anomaly simply brings RSPB Conwy into line with most other cafés on the charity's reserves, which have an entrance fee, parking fee or membership requirement for access. This approach is also consistent with many other visitor attractions, such as National Trust and Cadw sites, which charge an entry fee or parking charge for use of their café facilities as part of the wider attraction.

"The volume of concerns expressed about the change, however, means we will, of course, continue to monitor it and, as discussed, we will conduct a review of the implementation and approach in due course.

"In the meantime, we look forward to the opening of the Active Travel Route, which is such a valued investment in the region and will enable many more people to enjoy this incredible part of the country."

Yr wythnos diwethaf, aeth Janet Finch-Saunders, yr Aelod o'r Senedd dros etholaeth Bangor, Conwy a Môn, i gyfarfod Alun Prichard, Cyfarwyddwr RSPB Cymru, i drafod pryderon a godwyd gan drigolion am y ffioedd i bobl sy'n defnyddio'r caffi yn unig ar safle RSPB Conwy.

Meddai Janet:

"Cysylltodd llawer o drigolion Conwy â mi gyda phryderon am orfod talu tâl ychwanegol dim ond i ddefnyddio'r caffi ar safle'r RSPB, yn hytrach na cherdded o gwmpas y brif warchodfa.

"Yn ystod fy nghyfarfod gyda'r RSPB, codais y pryderon hyn gyda'r Cyfarwyddwr a galwais ar y sefydliad i gael gwared ar y tâl ychwanegol i bobl sy'n dymuno cael mynediad i'r caffi yn unig. Mae llawer o bobl leol yn defnyddio'r caffi hwn fel lle i gwrdd â ffrindiau a chymdeithasu. Mae'n bwysig bod gan breswylwyr fynediad i'r mathau hyn o gyfleusterau."

Yn dilyn y cyfarfod, rhoddodd Mr Prichard y datganiad canlynol i Janet:

"Roedd yn braf siarad â chi yn gynharach yr wythnos hon a chael cyfle i drafod y pryderon a godwyd gan nifer o bobl leol sydd wrth eu bodd â’r caffi a'r safle. Yn amlwg, mae rhywfaint o siom a dryswch wedi bod, ac fe wnaethom ni drafod y ffaith bod y newid hwn wedi’i wneud er mwyn mynd i'r afael â sefyllfa annheg – ac nad oedd hynny wedi’i ddeall. Cyn hyn, gallai ymwelwyr ddefnyddio'r caffi heb dalu tâl mynediad a heb fod yn aelodau ac yna mynd ymlaen i grwydro o gwmpas y warchodfa. Dyw hynny ddim yn deg chwaith i'r rhai sydd wedi talu'r tâl mynediad neu'r tâl aelodaeth er mwyn cael yr union brofiad hwnnw.

"Mae cywiro’r anghysondeb annheg hwn yn golygu bod RSPB Conwy bellach yn gyson â'r rhan fwyaf o gaffis eraill ar warchodfeydd yr elusen, sy’n codi ffi mynediad neu ffi parcio neu sy’n ei gwneud yn ofynnol bod yn aelod er mwyn cael mynediad. Mae'r dull hwn hefyd yn gyson â llawer o atyniadau eraill i ymwelwyr, fel safleoedd yr Ymddiriedolaeth Genedlaethol a Cadw, sy'n codi ffi mynediad neu dâl parcio am ddefnyddio eu cyfleusterau caffi fel rhan o'r atyniad ehangach.

"Mae nifer uchel y pryderon a fynegwyd am y newid, fodd bynnag, yn golygu y byddwn ni, wrth gwrs, yn parhau i fonitro’r sefyllfa ac, fel y trafodwyd, byddwn yn cynnal adolygiad o'r broses o roi’r newid hwn ar waith a'r dull a gymerwyd maes o law.

"Yn y cyfamser, edrychwn ymlaen at agor y Llwybr Teithio Llesol, sy'n fuddsoddiad mor werthfawr yn y rhanbarth ac a fydd yn rhoi cyfle i lawer mwy o bobl fwynhau'r rhan anhygoel hon o'r wlad."
