Janet Finch-Saunders, the Member of the Senedd for Bangor, Conwy and Môn, has raised deep concerns about the number of Nursing graduates facing being left without work, following the completion of their degree.
This is due to HEIW, forecasts for the current cohort taking place during the Covid-19 pandemic, where staffing turnover in the NHS was high, and the service was under immense pressure. While, now staff retention in the Welsh NHS has improved. Meaning that fewer people have left the NHS and fewer vacancies have become available.
However, the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board has the highest level of full-time equivalent vacancies for registered nursing staff, at nearly 400 vacancies. This is nearly double the amount of vacancies in the Hywel Dda Health Board area.
Janet commented:
“It is deeply concerning that newly qualified nurses, who have dedicated years to training for a profession our Welsh NHS depends upon, are now facing the prospect of unemployment.
“ These graduates, are being let down at the very start of their careers. It simply does not make sense that Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board is still carrying almost 400 registered nursing vacancies while talented, qualified nurses are struggling to secure employment. We cannot afford to lose this generation of nurses through poor workforce planning.
“The Welsh Government and HEIW must urgently review their approach and ensure these graduates are given the opportunity to put their skills to work caring for patients across North Wales."

Mae Janet Finch-Saunders, yr Aelod o'r Senedd dros Fangor Conwy Môn, wedi codi pryderon mawr am nifer y graddedigion nyrsio sy'n wynebu cael eu gadael heb waith, ar ôl graddio.
Mae hyn oherwydd AaGIC, a’r rhagolygon ar gyfer y garfan bresennol a gafodd eu gwneud yn ystod pandemig Covid-19, pan oedd trosiant staff yn y GIG yn uchel, a’r gwasanaeth o dan bwysau enfawr. Tra nawr, mae cyfraddau cadw staff yn y GIG yng Nghymru wedi gwella, sy'n golygu bod llai o bobl wedi gadael y GIG a llai o swyddi gwag ar gael.
Fodd bynnag, Bwrdd Iechyd Prifysgol Betsi Cadwaladr sydd â'r lefel uchaf o swyddi gwag cyfwerth ag amser llawn ar gyfer staff nyrsio cofrestredig, sef bron i 400 o swyddi gwag. Mae hyn bron i ddwywaith nifer y swyddi gwag yn ardal Bwrdd Iechyd Hywel Dda.
Meddai Janet:
"Mae'n achos pryder mawr fod nyrsys sydd newydd gymhwyso, sydd wedi neilltuo blynyddoedd i hyfforddi ar gyfer proffesiwn y mae ein GIG yng Nghymru yn dibynnu arno, bellach yn wynebu'r posibilrwydd o ddiweithdra.
"Mae'r graddedigion hyn yn cael eu methu ar gychwyn eu gyrfaoedd. Dydy o ddim yn gwneud synnwyr bod Bwrdd Iechyd Prifysgol Betsi Cadwaladr yn dal i fod â bron i 400 o swyddi nyrsys cofrestredig gwag tra bod nyrsys talentog, cymwys yn cael trafferth dod o hyd i waith. Allwn ni ddim fforddio colli'r genhedlaeth hon o nyrsys trwy gynllunio'r gweithlu yn wael.
"Rhaid i Lywodraeth Cymru ac AaGIC adolygu eu dull ar unwaith a sicrhau bod y graddedigion hyn yn cael y cyfle i roi eu sgiliau ar waith drwy ofalu am gleifion ledled y Gogledd."
