Janet Finch-Saunders MS has welcomed the decision by a number of major supermarkets to temporarily remove disposable barbeques from sale amid the heightened risk of wildfires, and is calling on remaining retailers to follow suit.
The move comes as parts of Wales continue to experience exceptionally dry conditions and follows a number of significant wildfires in recent months. Janet Finch-Saunders noted that this is an issue that she has been raising for many years, having written to all major supermarkets in 2022 urging them to stop selling disposable barbeques because of the fire risk they pose during periods of hot, dry weather.
Janet Finch-Saunders, Senedd Member for Bangor Conwy Môn said:
“I welcome the decision by some major supermarkets to remove disposable barbeques from sale during this period of heightened wildfire risk. It is a sensible and responsible step that helps reduce the risk of further devastating fires.
Following concerns about wildfire risks, I wrote to all major supermarkets back in 2022 calling on them to stop selling disposable barbeques. I am pleased to see some retailers have now taken action, but I call on those who have not yet done so to follow their lead.
The recent wildfires have had a significant impact on our communities, emergency services, farmers and our natural environment. While everyone has a role to play in preventing fires, retailers can also make an important contribution by taking sensible precautions during periods of prolonged hot and dry weather.”
