The Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy and the Welsh Conservative Older People’s Champion – Janet Finch-Saunders MS – has again underlined her commitment to propose legislation which would protect and promote the rights of older people in Wales, in questions to the Deputy Minister and Chief Whip.
Underlining the need for such legislation, Janet said:
“According to the United Nations Principles for Older Persons, our most vulnerable should have access to adequate health care, be able to live in environments that are safe, benefit from community care and protection, and be treated fairly.
“Older people’s experiences during this pandemic have only strengthened the case for further protection of their rights in law and improved knowledge and recognition of these rights, with Wales remaining a long way off achieving so many of these vitally important principals.
“Given that the Conwy County Borough has the highest percentage of older people aged over 65, I have long been a strong proponent of a Bill to enshrine the rights of Wales’s older people in our legislature. With such a move supported by the Older People’s Commissioner, it is about time that the Welsh Government realises the positives that such a Bill could bring.”
