Pause in Tourism Tax Implementation is Not All as it Appears/ Saib i’r Dreth Dwristiaeth – mwy i hyn na hynny?

Following a meeting of the Economy and Place and Scrutiny Committee last night, where councillors put forward a motion to pause bringing in the tourism tax, warnings have been sounded by a long serving Senedd member.

A representative for Bangor Conwy Mon, Janet Finch-Saunders MS said, whilst it was good news, she would have preferred them to stop the Tourist Tax in its tracks.

At the meeting three councillors put forward a counter proposal to stop the tourism tax, a tax that would hit many hospitality businesses and damage our visitor economy.

Instead of supporting this motion placed by Cllr. Jo Nuttall, Conservative, Cllr Mandy Hawkins Labour and Cllr Samantha Cotton, Conservative, other committee members preferred just a pause.

Janet said:

“The worry here however, is that in just 8 months’ time all council seats will be up for grabs and we have to be certain, this is not a pre-election sweetener, intended to help their chances on polling day, only to implement this dreadful tax after the elections.

“If any current Conwy County Borough Councillor believes in supporting our hard working business owners, the only real proposal worth supporting is to stop any thoughts of bringing this tax forward.

“Jumping on the bandwagon of this latest proposal were members of the Reform party who attended the meeting last night but who didn’t vote.

It will be interesting as to whether they will stand up and kick this tourism tax into touch.

“A pause is great but a complete reversal would be even better.”

Yn dilyn cyfarfod o Bwyllgor yr Economi, Lleoedd a Chraffu neithiwr, lle cyflwynodd cynghorwyr gynnig i oedi cyflwyno'r dreth dwristiaeth, mae rhybuddion wedi cael eu rhannu gan Aelod o'r Senedd profiadol.

Dywedodd cynrychiolydd ar gyfer Bangor Conwy Môn, Janet Finch-Saunders AS, fod y newyddion i gyflwyno saib yn dda, ond y byddai'n llawer gwell ganddi bod y Dreth Dwristiaeth yn dod i ben yn llwyr.

Yn y cyfarfod cyflwynodd tri chynghorydd gynnig i atal y dreth dwristiaeth, treth a fyddai'n taro llawer o fusnesau lletygarwch ac yn niweidio ein heconomi ymwelwyr.

Yn hytrach na chefnogi'r cynnig hwn gan y Cynghorydd Jo Nuttall, y Ceidwadwyr, y Cynghorydd Mandy Hawkins, Llafur a'r Cynghorydd Samantha Cotton, y Ceidwadwyr, roedd yn well gan aelodau eraill y pwyllgor weld saib yn unig.

Meddai Janet:

"Y pryder yma, fodd bynnag, yw y bydd pob sedd cyngor ar gael ymhen cwta 8 mis ac mae'n rhaid i ni fod yn siŵr nad rhywbeth i ddenu pleidleisiau yn y cyfnod cyn etholiad yw hyn, a’i fod wedi’i fwriadu i roi hwb i siawns aelodau ar ddiwrnod y cyfri – gyda hwythau wedyn yn adfer y dreth ofnadwy hon ar ôl yr etholiadau.

"Os oes yna unrhyw Gynghorydd Bwrdeistref Sirol Conwy presennol yn credu mewn cefnogi ein perchnogion busnes gweithgar, yr unig gynnig gwirioneddol gwerth ei gefnogi yw’r un i roi'r gorau i unrhyw syniad o gyflwyno’r dreth hon.

"Dilyn y dorf gyda’r cynnig diweddaraf hwn oedd hanes aelodau Reform a fynychodd y cyfarfod neithiwr ond a ataliodd eu pleidleisiau.

Bydd yn ddiddorol gweld a fyddant yn sefyll i fyny ac yn cael gwared ar y dreth dwristiaeth hon.

"Mae seibiant yn wych ond nid da lle gellir gwell, a byddai cael gwared arni’n llwyr hyd yn oed yn well."
