Figures released in April show that two-thirds of new cancer cases are for those aged 65 and over, with breast cancer remaining the most prevalent cancer for women.
Speaking yesterday in questions to the First Minister on women’s health in Wales, Assembly Member Janet Finch-Saunders called on the Welsh Government to extend the age range for invitations for breast cancer screening, to match developments in England.
She said “Devolution should not mean a lottery postcode for care. Women in Wales should receive the same level of services as their English counterparts.”
“Screening is vital in the fight to catch the disease early and improve cancer survival rates for patients. As the danger from breast cancer continues well after someone reaches 70 years old, I urge the Welsh Government to seriously consider extending the age range for invitations for breast cancer screening”.
