Thieves pinched a tiny tortoise from Conwy Water Gardens.

The Horsefield Tortoise, about 10cm in size, was stolen from the wildlife centre in Rowen on Friday and staff are "very concerned" about the welfare of the animal.

This breed of tortoise is frequently stocked in pet stores and can live longer than 50 years - however they do require "specialist care".

In a post on Facebook Conwy Water Gardens said: "We are sad to say that at sometime on Friday one of our Tortoises was stolen.

"It's a Horsefield Tortoise about 10cm in size.

"We are very concerned of the welfare of this lovely animal, due to the very specialist care and environment they require.

"Please can everyone share this status, and if the tortoise is dropped (off) anonymously, we will not take any further action.

"Also if anyone is offered, or sees one for sale can you please inform us."

Conwy Water Gardens has a "tortoise" area and offer advice to pet owners about caring for the reptiles.
