Cllr Janet Finch-Saunders AM today leant her voice to calls from the Welsh Conservatives for the Welsh Government to recognise the massive contribution and commitment made by all Welsh Armed Forces personnel.
Janet said: “Our armed forces have put their lives on the line for this country and we need to give them the respect and support they deserve.
“I am calling today for the Welsh Government to set out plans to formally recognise the 100 year anniversary of the Great War in 2014, as the UK Government has done.
“We also need to see much more action by the Welsh Government to roll out mental health services and residential facilities for those affected by Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and other conditions brought on by combat.
“The Welsh Conservatives have set out in our manifesto plans for an Armed Forces Card. This would increase awareness of the rights, needs and services available to armed forces and ex-forces personnel.
“The Card would ensure free bus travel for all veterans – there are currently 60,000 in Wales missing out. It would also improve health provision for veterans under the NHS Priority Treatment policy – a policy only 19% of GPs are aware of!
“Whilst we cannot afford the benefits the United States gives to their veterans, an Armed Forces Card would give free access to Local Authority leisure centres and Cadw sites, giving them the opportunity to fully experience the country they have given so much to defend.
“Our Armed Forces simply cannot be praised enough for the sacrifices they make daily for our country. These policies go some way to show our appreciation.”
