Taxpayers furious over rising bill for excessive salaries

The number of council officers with pay packages worth more than £100,000 a year has risen at Welsh councils over the last year.

The figures emerged following a Freedom of Information request by the Taxpayers’ Alliance.

According to their figures, 107 people enjoyed salaries above £100,000 in 2015-16, compared to 105 the year before.

It has prompted calls for greater transparency, with Welsh Conservatives highlighting anger amongst residents who have endured rising council tax bills over the period.

Cardiff Council had the highest number of employees in receipt of salaries over £150,000 with six, followed by Swansea (13), Wrexham (12) and Caerphilly.

Meanwhile, 30 council officers received remuneration packages of over £150,000.

Shadow Local Government Secretary, Janet Finch-Saunders, said:

“With council tax bills having risen across Wales in recent years, despite a council tax freeze in England, taxpayers will be furious at having been asked to foot the bill for excessive council salaries.

“For that sort of pay, people expect the very highest of standards and yet most council workers are facing a pay freeze this year. Not senior managers it seems.

“Right across Wales people are being asked to pay more for less, with Labour- and Plaid-run councils increasingly moving towards monthly bin collections. It’s just not good enough.”
