PRESS RELEASE
A group of pupils from Ysgol Glan Conwy are securing their place in history by burying a time capsule at Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water’s brand new £9 million service water reservoir at Coed Dolwyd.
The group were invited to the site to bury the capsule as work on the major investment scheme by the utility company enters its final stages. The reservoir, once complete will store enough water to fill nine Olympic size swimming pools and will provide 70,000 customers living in the Colwyn Bay and Llandudno area with additional security of supply.
To mark the burying of the capsule, Aberconwy Assembly Member, Janet Finch Saunders was invited to see representatives from the school’s council bury the capsule
Ahead of the burial of the capsule, the pupils from the school and staff working on the project teamed up to fill the capsule with a collection of drawings, messages and photographs. The hope is that when the capsule is discovered in years to come that it will give those who find it a feel for what life was like when the reservoir was constructed.
The reservoir is the first site of its kind that has been built in north Wales since 1995 and it will be particularly important during the busy tourist periods when additional pressures are placed on the drinking water network and in the face of any future population growth in the area. Work on this large scale engineering scheme began last October and is expected to be completed by March 2014.
Claire Holland, the teacher at Ysgol Glan Conwy said” The pupils were really enthusiastic about being asked to contribute to the time capsule. They have enjoyed learning about the project and seeing how the new reservoir fits into the water cycle. The exercise has been lots of fun and educational at the same time.”
Speaking at the event, Janet Finch Saunders AM said: “I was delighted to have had the opportunity to come along to see the children and staff, bury their time capsules. It was also great to come back to the site and see how the construction has progressed over the past few months. It will be an important scheme for residents and businesses in Aberconwy as it will provide them with additional security of supply for many years to come.”
Welsh Water is investing heavily and working hard to ensure top quality services to all the communities it serves. The company is investing £1.5 billion in its water and sewerage network between 2010 and 2015.
It is a ‘not-for-profit company’ which has been owned by Glas Cymru since 2001. Welsh Water does not have shareholders, and any financial surpluses are reinvested in the business for the benefit of customers.
Mae criw o ddisgyblion o Ysgol Glan Conwy yn sicrhau eu lle mewn hanes trwy gladdu capsiwlau amser ar safle cronfa wasanaeth newydd Dŵr Cymru sy’n cael ei datblygu ar gost o £9 miliwn yng Nghoed Dolwyd.
Gwahoddwyd y disgyblion i’r safle i gladdu’r capsiwlau wrth i’r gwaith ar y cynllun buddsoddi sylweddol dynnu tua’r terfyn. Pan fydd y gronfa wedi’i chwblhau, bydd yn gallu storio digon o ddŵr i lenwi naw pwll nofio maint Olympaidd a bydd yn diogelu cyflenwad 70,000 o gwsmeriaid sy’n byw yn ardaloedd Bae Colwyn a Llandudno.
Gwahoddwyd Aelod Cynulliad Aberconwy, Janet Finch Saunders, i weld cynrychiolwyr o gyngor yr ysgol yn claddu’r capsiwlau.
Cyn claddu’r capsiwlau, bu disgyblion a staff o’r ysgol yn gweithio ar brosiect i’w llenwi â chasgliad o ddarluniau, negeseuon a ffotograffau. Y gobaith yw y bydd y capsiwlau’n cael eu darganfod ymhen blynyddoedd mawr ac y byddant yn rhoi syniad i’r rhai sy’n dod ar eu traws am fywyd yng nghyfnod adeiladu’r gronfa.
Dyma’r gronfa gyntaf o’i bath i gael ei chreu yng ngogledd Cymru ers 1995 a bydd yn eithriadol o bwysig yn ystod y tymhorau ymwelwyr prysur pan fydd galw mawr ar y rhwydwaith dŵr yfed. Bydd hefyd yn gallu ymdopi â’r galw os bydd poblogaeth yr ardal yn tyfu. Dechreuwyd gweithio ar y cynllun peirianyddol mawr ym mis Hydref y llynedd a disgwylir y bydd wedi’i gwblhau erbyn mis Mawrth 2014.
Dywedodd Claire Holland, athrawes yn Ysgol Glan Conwy, “Roedd y disgyblion wrth eu bodd o gael gwahoddiad i gyfrannu at y capsiwlau amser. Maen nhw wedi mwynhau dysgu am y prosiect a gweld sut y bydd y gronfa newydd yn dod yn rhan o’r gylchred ddŵr. Bu’r gwaith yn hwyl ac yn addysgiadol ar yr un pryd.”
Roedd gan Janet Finch Saunders AC air i’w ddweud yn yr achlysur: “Mae’n braf iawn cael cyfle i ddod draw i weld y plant a’r staff yn claddu’r capsiwlau amser. Mae hefyd yn wych cael dod yn ôl i’r safle a gweld sut y mae’r gwaith wedi symud ymlaen dros y misoedd diwethaf. Bydd yn gynllun pwysig i drigolion a busnesau Aberconwy gan y bydd yn diogelu eu cyflenwad am flynyddoedd i ddod.”
Mae Dŵr Cymru’n buddsoddi’n helaeth ac yn gweithio’n galed i sicrhau gwasanaethau o’r safon uchaf i bob un o’r cymunedau y mae’n eu gwasanaethu. Mae’r cwmni’n buddsoddi £1.5 biliwn yn ei rwydwaith dŵr a charthffosiaeth rhwng 2010 a 2015.
Mae’n gwmni ‘nid-er-elw’ sy’n eiddo i Glas Cymru ers 2001. Nid oes cyfranddalwyr gan Dŵr Cymru ac mae unrhyw arian sydd dros ben yn cael ei ailfuddsoddi yn y busnes er budd y cwsmeriaid.
