The Assembly Member for Aberconwy and Shadow Spokesperson for Local Government, Janet Finch-Saunders AM has today spoken of her delight on becoming species champion for the Harbour Porpoise – a threatened species found off the coast of her constituency of Aberconwy.
Janet said: “Harbour porpoises are under threat from pollution in our seas, and sadly suffer in particular from boat collisions, underwater man-made noise, and accidental capture in fishing nets.
“As species champion for the harbour porpoise, I will be speaking up for their wellbeing in the National Assembly for Wales, and working to ensure that we do all we can to secure the future of this species.
“Sustainable fisheries management, proper enforcement of Marine Protected Areas, and effective marine planning will all ensure that the natural environment and food sources that harbour porpoises rely on for survival are protected and allowed to thrive.
“In signing up to be a Species Champion, I hope that I will not only be able to preserve the future of the harbour porpoise, but to promote the diverse marine life found around the coast of Wales which can inspire such wonder in us all.”
