23-10-2015 Weekly News Column
Last week as recess, and as always, I spent the time away from Cardiff Bay out and about in the constituency, visiting Dwfygyflchi, Eglwysbach, Glan Conwy and Betws Y Coed, and holding advice surgeries in Llanrwst and Penrhyn Bay.
It’s been wonderful meeting so many people across Aberconwy, especially in the Conwy Valley, which looks particularly beautiful at this time of year. My recent visit to Pero Petfoods, who have been in business for over 30 years, and now ship as far afield as Singapore and Malaysia, was a real eye opener – this is business brilliantly showcasing local Welsh talent and innovation.
My Penrhyn Bay advice surgery was held in the Community Library, which is a fantastic community resource, run by a team of praiseworthy volunteers. As well as plenty of books to borrow, and a wildlife-friendly garden, the free use of computers and Wi-Fi is a real boost to the community – particularly popular, I am sure, with children catching up on homework!
I also had the chance to catch up with the FUW at my recent Farming and Agricultural Surgery in Llanrwst, who share my concerns at the Welsh Labour Government cutting funding to the Young Farmers Club. It was really inspiring to chat to a YFC member about the charity work and activities undertaken by YFCs in Aberconwy. (And whilst in Llanrwst, I popped into the Tŷ Asha Balti House, which recently added ‘Best Curry House in North Wales’ to their impressive number of accolades!)
In the Assembly, I have been calling on the Welsh Government to work with Conwy County Borough Council – next time a bid is submitted – and finally extend the cycle path at Glan Conwy.
As I write, the number one issue that has been raised with me this week has been the A55 Penmaenbach roadworks and resulting traffic queues. I have written personally to the Minister for Economy, Science and Transport – Edwina Hart AM – who is responsible for the North Wales Trunk Road Agency and these works.
On Remembrance Sunday, I shall, along with many other civic dignitaries, voluntary organisations and local charities, be making representation as the Assembly Member, in honour of those who have so bravely fought, and given their lives for Queen and country, in defence of our freedoms and values, and I am sure you will all be joining me in keeping them our hearts and minds.
My next Advice Surgery will be held on Friday 27th November, at Craig-y-Don Community Centre, from 4:30pm – 6pm. For more information, please contact my office on 01492 871198.
