Welsh Labour and Plaid Cymru have announced their intention to increase the size of the Senedd by over 30 Members, bringing the total to 96 from the current 60. This proposal is estimated to cost the Welsh taxpayer in the region of £100 million.

Their proposals will also radically change our electoral system, putting controls in place on the candidates that parties can select, changing the boundaries of the areas that Members will represent and most importantly, fundamentally altering the ways in which we elect our representatives.

Given that these seismic changes are proposed to be in place before the next Senedd election in 2026 I want to know your views.

Bydd eu cynigion hefyd yn newid ein system etholaethol yn sylweddol, gan roi rheolaethau ar yr ymgeiswyr y gall y pleidiau eu dethol, newid ffiniau’r ardaloedd y bydd Aelodau yn eu cynrychioli ac yn bwysicaf oll, newid y ffyrdd rydym yn ethol ein cynrychiolwyr yn llwyr.

O ystyried bod cynnig i gyflwyno’r newidiadau seismig hyn cyn etholiad nesaf y Senedd yn 2026, rwyf am gael clywed eich barn.

As Wales is facing a cost-of-living crisis, do you think that spending £100 million on more politicians is a good use of public money?
Do you believe that such significant amounts of public money would be better spent on our public services?
Are you familiar with the concept of “zipping” in terms of party candidate lists?
These proposals would legally require political parties to alternate between male and female candidates on their candidate list. Do you think such a process will help voters elect the most capable and able politicians?
Do you believe that having multiple Members represent one area will confuse residents on who actually represents them?
These changes will also prevent voters from being able to vote for a particular candidate. Do you think that this will undermine voters’ ability to hold politicians to account?
Given that last year’s Senedd election saw turn out below 50%, do you believe that these complex alterations will encourage higher voter turnout?
Do you agree with me that such significant changes to our constitution, electoral system and democratic process should be brought before the people of Wales in a referendum?
