Following discussions with a local resident regarding the inaccessibility of play facilities in Llanrwst and the Conwy Valley for disabled children, the Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy – Janet Finch-Saunders – has welcomed plans to undertake improvements to play facilities.
In response to her correspondence raising concerns, Mr Geraint Edwards, Head of Environment, Roads & Facilities (ERF) at Conwy County Borough Council (CCBC) has outlined the authority’s recent and proposed works to improve accessibility of Conwy Valley play parks.
Commenting on the news Janet said:
“It has been truly distressing to hear stories of disabled children being unable to access play facilities and instead having to watch their peers, friends or siblings enjoy these playgrounds which are out of their reach.
“Having written to CCBC in order to raise these concerns I am overjoyed to be informed of the ongoing works ERF have undertaken to address this matter and welcome their proposals for further improvements in Llanrwst and across the Conwy Valley.
“In March of this year the Local Authority will commence installation works on new inclusive play equipment in the Pentre Du play area in Betws-y-Coed, which will include a new inclusive roundabout, a basket swing, a new safety gate and improvements to the access pathway.
“Additionally, in Llanrwst, the Local Authority is working with a local business owner to propose improvements to the play area off Cae Felin and Pen-y-Dre, which has been identified as the most appropriate location due to its accessibility and size.
These proposals are to be submitted to the Llanrwst Town Council for their approval and I would urge all councillors to work with CCBC to see much needed improvements to the accessibility of play parks for disabled children and young people.
“I truly hope these efforts support disabled children and young people, along with their families, in being able to actively utilise play facilities with their peers.”

Yn dilyn trafodaethau gyda phreswylydd lleol ynghylch hygyrchedd cyfleusterau chwarae i blant anabl yn Llanrwst a Dyffryn Conwy, mae Janet Finch-Saunders, yr AS dros Aberconwy, wedi croesawu cynlluniau i wella cyfleusterau chwarae.
Mewn ymateb i'w gohebiaeth yn codi pryderon, mae Mr Geraint Edwards, Pennaeth yr Amgylchedd, Ffyrdd a Chyfleusterau (ERF) Cyngor Bwrdeistref Sirol Conwy wedi amlinellu gwaith diweddar ac arfaethedig yr awdurdod i wella hygyrchedd parciau chwarae Dyffryn Conwy.
Wrth ymateb i'r newyddion, dywedodd Janet:
“Roedd hi'n dorcalonnus clywed straeon am blant anabl yn methu â defnyddio cyfleusterau chwarae, ac yn gorfod gwylio eu cyfoedion, ffrindiau neu frodyr a chwiorydd yn mwynhau'r meysydd chwarae hyn sydd allan o'u gafael.
“Ar ôl ysgrifennu at Gyngor Conwy i godi'r pryderon hyn, mae'n bleser clywed am y gwaith mae ERF wedi'i wneud i fynd i'r afael â'r mater hwn ac rwy’n croesawu eu cynigion ar gyfer gwelliannau pellach yn Llanrwst ac ar draws y Dyffryn.
“Ym mis Mawrth eleni bydd yr Awdurdod Lleol yn dechrau gosod offer chwarae cynhwysol newydd yn ardal chwarae Pentre Du ym Metws-y-coed, a fydd yn cynnwys cylchfan gynhwysol newydd, siglen fasged, giât ddiogelwch newydd a gwelliannau i'r llwybr mynediad.
“Hefyd, yn Llanrwst, mae'r Awdurdod Lleol yn gweithio gyda pherchennog busnes lleol i gynnig gwelliannau i'r ardal chwarae oddi ar Cae'r Felin a Phen-y-Dre, a nodwyd fel y lleoliad mwyaf addas oherwydd ei faint a'i leoliad hwylus.
Bydd y cynigion hyn yn cael eu cyflwyno i Gyngor Tref Llanrwst i'w cymeradwyo a byddwn yn annog pob cynghorydd i weithio gyda Chyngor Conwy i greu'r gwelliannau sydd eu gwir angen o ran hygyrchedd parciau chwarae i blant a phobl ifanc anabl.
“Rwy'n mawr obeithio y bydd yr ymdrechion hyn yn helpu plant a phobl ifanc anabl, ynghyd â'u teuluoedd, i allu defnyddio cyfleusterau chwarae gyda'u cyfoedion.”
