Since 1995 The Wildlife Trust has estimated number of hedgehogs in the UK has plummeted by roughly 1,000,000, now the population is believed to be less than 500,000 across the entire UK.
Given this, The Garden Wildlife Direct organisation has been promoting ways in which individuals can support local hedgehog populations, including by building a hedgehog home in their garden.
Commenting on the matter Janet said:
“Urban expansion across Wales has threatened the natural habitats of many animals including the hedgehog. As such, I am delighted to see that this organisation outline the numerous ways in which these animals can be supported.
“It is clear that these animals need protection to ensure their survivability in our more urban world and by residents taking action such as participating in this campaign we can all do our part to safeguard these beautiful animals.
“I would like to thank and commend The Garden Wildlife Direct organisation for their continued commitment to protecting and promoting the interests of all animals across our country.”

Yr Aelod o’r Senedd dros Aberconwy yn croesawu ymgyrch Garden Wildlife Direct i adfer nifer y draenogod
Ers 1995 mae’r Ymddiriedolaeth Natur yn amcangyfrif bod nifer y draenogod yn y DU wedi gostwng tua 1,000,000, a chredir erbyn hyn bod y boblogaeth yn llai na 500,000 ar hyd a lled y DU.
Gyda hyn mewn cof, mae sefydliad The Garden Wildlife Direct wedi bod yn hyrwyddo ffyrdd y gall unigolion gefnogi poblogaethau lleol o ddraenogod, gan gynnwys adeiladu cartref i ddraenogod yn eu gardd.
Gan gyfeirio at hyn, dywedodd Janet:
“Mae ehangu trefol ledled Cymru wedi bygwth cynefinoedd naturiol llawer o anifeiliaid gan gynnwys y draenog. Felly mae’n hyfryd gweld bod y sefydliad hwn yn amlinellu’r ffyrdd niferus o gynorthwyo’r anifeiliaid hyn.
“Mae’n amlwg bod angen gwarchod yr anifeiliaid hyn er mwyn sicrhau eu bod yn goroesi yn ein byd mwy trefol a thrwy gael preswylwyr i weithredu drwy gymryd rhan yn yr ymgyrch hon gall pob un ohonom ni wneud ein rhan i ddiogelu’r anifeiliaid prydferth hyn.
“Hoffwn ddiolch i sefydliad The Garden Wildlife Direct a’u canmol am eu hymrwymiad parhaus i warchod a hyrwyddo buddiannau pob anifail ar hyd a lled ein gwlad.”
