Further news on restoring sand at North Shore Beach / Newyddion pellach am adfer tywod ar Draeth y Gogledd

Llandudno's North Shore beach

In a response received from Julie James MS, Minister for Climate Change Welsh Government, Janet Finch-Saunders MS has discovered that while the Welsh Government does accept that sand can be an effective sea defence it remains opposed to deploying sand on Llandudno’s North Shore beach.

With hundreds of hotels and guest houses and a diverse and vibrant high street all linked to the continued success of the tourism economy of historic Victorian resort, Janet Finch-Saunders MS has been fighting since 2014 to see a programme of works undertaken to remove quarry stones from North Shore beach and to have sand returned.

Commenting on the response Janet said:

“Having previously indicated that sand would not be a feasible option for Llandudno’s North Shore beach, Julie James MS has now confirmed that the use of sand on both the Rhos-on-Sea and Colwyn Bay beaches is viewed as an effective sea defence.

“I am deeply disappointed that once again the Welsh Government have agreed that sand can be used effectively to protect communities from coastal erosion and flooding but remain determined not to see it used at the Queen of Welsh Resorts, a position that I and others will find totally ridiculous.

“Llandudno plays a leading role in the national tourism sector. It has been identified that should the town continue to adapt to the changing conditions within the tourism market and invest accordingly, there is every possibility that the number of day visitors could increase from 2.88 million in 2018 to 4.08 million by 2045. Additionally, the economic impact of tourism in Llandudno is expected to rise to over £500 million by 2045.

“I believe that the restoration of a sandy beach at North Shore is vital if we as a community are to achieve these ambitious targets.

“Visitors, businesses, residents, the Local Authority and other elected representatives can all see the common-sense approach of utilising sand to protect Llandudno while simultaneously supporting the local economy. It appears that it is only the Welsh Government that cannot see the win-win outcome in such a programme.

“Currently I am still awaiting a response from Vaughan Gething MS, Minister for the Economy, Welsh Government, regarding other potential funding avenues that could be used to see sand returned to this beach.

“I remain firmly committed to exploring all possible opportunities to see a sandy beach returned at the North Shore.”

Newyddion pellach am adfer tywod ar

Draeth y Gogledd

Mewn ymateb a gafwyd gan Julie James AS, Gweinidog Newid Hinsawdd Llywodraeth Cymru, mae Janet Finch-Saunders AS wedi darganfod, er bod Llywodraeth Cymru'n derbyn y gall tywod fod yn amddiffynfa effeithiol rhag y môr, mae'n parhau i wrthwynebu defnyddio tywod ar Draeth y Gogledd yn Llandudno.

Gyda channoedd o westai a thai llety a stryd fawr amrywiol a bywiog sydd oll yn gysylltiedig â llwyddiant parhaus economi twristiaeth y cyrchfan Fictoraidd hanesyddol hwn, mae Janet Finch-Saunders AS wedi bod yn ymdrechu'n daer ers 2014 i weld rhaglen waith yn cael ei chwblhau er mwyn symud cerrig chwarel o Draeth y Gogledd ac adfer tywod yn ôl ar y traeth.

Wrth sôn am yr ymateb dywedodd Janet:

“Ar ôl nodi'n flaenorol na fyddai tywod yn opsiwn ymarferol ar gyfer Traeth y Gogledd Llandudno, mae Julie James AS bellach wedi cadarnhau bod y defnydd o dywod ar draethau Llandrillo-yn-Rhos a Bae Colwyn yn cael ei ystyried yn amddiffynfa effeithiol rhag y môr.

“Rwy’n siomedig iawn, unwaith eto, bod Llywodraeth Cymru wedi cytuno y gellir defnyddio tywod yn effeithiol i amddiffyn cymunedau rhag erydiad arfordirol a llifogydd ond ei bod yn parhau i fod yn benderfynol o beidio â gweld y dull hwn yn cael ei ddefnyddio ym Mrenhines Cyrchfannau Glan y Môr Cymru, safbwynt rydw i ac eraill yn ei ystyried yn hollol hurt.

“Mae gan Landudno ran flaenllaw yn y sector twristiaeth cenedlaethol. Nodwyd pe bai'r dref yn parhau i addasu i'r amodau sy'n newid yn y farchnad dwristiaeth a buddsoddi yn unol â hynny, bod yna bosibilrwydd y gallai nifer yr ymwelwyr dydd gynyddu o 2.88 miliwn yn 2018 i 4.08 miliwn erbyn 2045. Yn ogystal, mae disgwyl i effaith economaidd twristiaeth yn Llandudno godi i £500 miliwn a mwy erbyn 2045.

“Rwy’n credu bod adfer traeth tywod ar Draeth y Gogledd yn hanfodol os ydyn ni fel cymuned am gyrraedd y targedau uchelgeisiol hyn.

“Gall ymwelwyr, busnesau, trigolion, yr Awdurdod Lleol a chynrychiolwyr etholedig eraill weld mai mater o synnwyr cyffredin yw defnyddio tywod i amddiffyn Llandudno, gan gefnogi'r economi leol ar yr un pryd. Mae'n ymddangos mai dim ond Llywodraeth Cymru sy’n methu gweld y byddai rhaglen o'r fath o fudd i bawb.

“Ar hyn o bryd, rwy’n dal i aros am ymateb gan Vaughan Gething AS, Gweinidog yr Economi, Llywodraeth Cymru, ynglŷn â llwybrau cyllido posibl eraill y gellid eu defnyddio i weld tywod yn dychwelyd i'r traeth hwn.

“Rwy’n parhau i fod yn gwbl ymrwymedig i archwilio pob cyfle posibl i weld tywod yn dychwelyd i Draeth y Gogledd.”
