After being approached by Glan Conwy residents worried about road safety, the Assembly Member for Aberconwy recently wrote to Ken Skates AM, Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Infrastructure. Early this week the Welsh Government have responded to Janet, agreeing to her request for a review of the A470 which goes through the village.
Janet said:
“Like so many residents, I have been worried about the safety of pedestrians in Glan Conwy for many years.
“In 2012 some Glan Conwy residents planned to protest on the A470 if demands for a pedestrian crossing were not met, and 300 people signed a petition to calling for a crossing.
“That year I joined a number of people and pupils from Ysgol Glan Conwy in a demonstration on and beside the A470 calling for a zebra crossing.
“Worryingly, this fast and busy section of road has no crossing that would stop traffic. This is needed as residents, including children, are having to cross the road to reach their homes, a number of businesses, train station, bus stops, and football pitch.
“One reason why I am concerned is the fact that according to GoSafe the most recent percentage of vehicles exceeding the 30mph speed limit was 43.3%.
“During the last five years I have been writing to the Welsh Government about the need for a crossing and a review of the road. I sent my latest letter to Ken Skates AM, Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Infrastructure last month.
“I am delighted to announce that the Cabinet Secretary has agreed to my request for a renewed review.
“In a letter this week the Welsh Government informed me that a Community Safety scheme will review all the concerns raised by the public with a view of developing proposals to improve road safety for the community.
“Importantly, the review will take place during the current financial year: 2017/18.
“This is a significant positive step forward, one which I hope will result in a decision to have a pedestrian crossing in Glan Conwy”
